UniGe supports Ukrainian universities in developing curricula in “Energy Sustainability in Buildings”

The University of Genoa is the coordinator of the Erasmus+ CBHE project UKRENERGY – Innovative Master Courses Supporting the Improvement of the Energy and Carbon Footprint of the Ukrainian Building Stock, an international initiative aimed at strengthening higher education in the field of energy efficiency and building sustainability.

The project has a twofold objective: on the one hand, to establish new Master’s degree programs in Energy Efficiency, Building Retrofitting and Energy Planning at Ukrainian universities; on the other, to promote innovative teaching methodologies and advanced knowledge in the energy sector, in line with European standards.

The project coordination meeting in Genoa

From March 16 to 19, 2026, the University of Genoa hosts the penultimate coordination meeting of the project, a key moment to review the results achieved and ongoing activities.

The meeting brings together the project partners: in addition to UniGe, eight Ukrainian universities, the Ukrainian governmental agency SAEE – State Agency on Energy Efficiency and Energy, and the European partners from the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków, and the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli.

During the meeting, participants assess the progress made between April 2025 and March 2026 and define the actions to be completed before the project’s conclusion, scheduled for November 2026. The sessions focus in particular on:

  • the acquisition of equipment (hardware and software) for teaching laboratories in Ukrainian universities;
  • the verification of the implementation of the new Master’s degree programs and related teaching activities;
  • the development of communication and dissemination actions;
  • the monitoring and evaluation of results by the Evaluation Board.

New Master’s degree programs for building sustainability

The UKRENERGY project specifically supports four Ukrainian universities—in Kyiv, Lviv, Dnipro and Odesa—in the development of Master’s degree programs focused on sustainable buildings and energy efficiency.

UniGe, together with the other European partners, has contributed to the design of these academic programs in accordance with the standards of the Bologna Process, adopting an approach based on student-centered learning and clearly defined learning outcomes.

The course content has been developed in collaboration with local stakeholders and addresses key topics such as:

  • building thermophysics;
  • HVAC system design;
  • integration of renewable energy sources in the urban environment.

The programs, structured over two years for a total of 120 ECTS credits, aim to train professionals capable of addressing the challenges of the energy transition in the building sector.

Training and exchange of expertise

Alongside the coordination meeting, lecturers from the Department of Education Sciences – DISFOR deliver a series of seminars focused on:

  • Educational and Teaching Research Methodology
  • Media and Technologies for Environmental Education

An additional opportunity for the exchange of expertise and best practices among the project partners.
